These summer classes are open to all rising 7th and 9th grade students.
Environmental Science
Today's children are increasingly disconnected from the natural world. This class will foster an appreciation and concern for our environment. We will learn about our local biodiversity, environmental problems and solutions. Scientific skills such as water quality monitoring, biodiversity assessment and GPS (mapping technology) will be introduced. Be ready to spend plenty of time outside!! Taught by Dr. Margaret Hodge, Lecturer of Biology at LSMSA.
Everyday Physics
From a classroom-sized camera to rainbows and soap bubbles, you’ll learn about color addition, the flow of energy in humans and other animals and in homes, geysers, cars, factories, cities, civilization, planets, and in the universe. You’ll learn about the sounds of echos, nature, music, and speech. You’ll see demonstrations of electric levitation, magnetic levitation, electrostatics, and the simple electrical generator that is behind our electrical civilization. You'll also learn about the radiation that enables cancer treatment, pasteurization, smoke detectors, supplies powers for pace makers and spaceships, and warms the interior of the Earth. Exploring the Human Body
Come along as we take a tour through the structures and functions of the Human Body. We will explore Skin, Bones, Muscles, Blood, and other components of the body. Be ready to learn about the fascinating, wonderful things your body does on a daily basis! We will complete our tour with the Brain, who manages the rest of the body. Taught by Dr. Allison Landry, Lecturer of Biology at LSMSA
Math in Sports
This course will give students a detailed look at Math and statistics as it relates to prominent sports and obscure sports. It is recommended, but not required, that you also register for "Sports Variety" which is the physical fitness component. Taught by Randy Key, Instructor of Math at LSMSA.
Piano for the Total Beginner
Designed for students with no music experience, the course will cover basics of music notation and keyboard orientation as well as playing early level repertoire. Led by Dr. Charles Jones, Senior Lecturer of Piano at LSMSA.
Piano Masterclass (Intermediate/Advanced)
This course will be taught in a masterclass (group) format and is designed for students with several years of private piano instruction. Students should bring their own scores for pieces they are already studying. Depending on enrollment and student interest, the course may also include a music history/theory and piano literature component. Led by Dr. Charles Jones, Senior Lecturer of Piano at LSMSA.
Sports Variety
Focused on fun and sportsmanship, sharpen your skills and learn the fundamentals of a variety of sports. Students will engage in activity in the LSMSA Gymnasium and on Eagle Field. Tennis shoes and athletic dress required for this portion of the day. It is recommended, but not required, that you also register for "Math in Sports" which compliments this course.
