    Role and Responsibilities

    The Director of Specialty Pharmacy and Mail Order will provide leadership and direction for specialty pharmacy services across CRx and Southern Scripts. The Director will be directly responsible for specialty pharmacy operations, specialty pharmacy call center services, medication access and affordability services, specialty pharmacy accreditation, mail order and strategies for business growth and service development. The Director will also provide direction and leadership to the Director of CRx Operations, pharmacy supervisors, outpatient pharmacy coordinators, pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, medication access specialists, and residents providing care for members using CRx Specialty Solutions. This position requires thorough understanding of drug pricing, medication reimbursement, our Variable Co-Pay Program and the specialty pharmacy marketplace.

    The Director of Specialty Pharmacy and Mail Order will be a member of the CRx Leadership Team, and will contribute to departmental oversight, teamwork, and strategy under the leadership of the CEO.

    Problems encountered are of a high level of scope and complexity. This position requires a great deal of organizational skill, innovation, independence, creativity and flexibility for decision making and problem solving. Interactions involve CRx and Southern Scripts members, managers and directors from other departments, pharmaceutical company vendors, and prescription drug benefit companies.

    This position is responsible for all professional services and mail order as well as drug products. The scope of members varies from adult to pediatrics and includes many specialty areas.

    I. Specialty Pharmacy Services

    • Develop and maintain efficient workflows within the specialty pharmacy.
    • Identify service gaps and implement mitigation strategies to improve service.
    • Develop and maintain key performance indicators to drive decision making and ensure service excellence.
    • Routinely monitor key performance indicators, identify opportunities for improvement, and collaborate with employees to achieve improvements.
    • Coordinate the development and maintenance of specialty training modules for pharmacists involved in providing specialty pharmacy services.
    • Identify the most cost-effective systems for medication packaging and prescription delivery logistics.
    • Ensure that the specialty pharmacy complies with policies and operating procedures.
    • Ensure that the specialty pharmacy is following all state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to pharmacy.
    • Coordinate out-of-state licensure and accompanying requirements, when applicable.
    • Ensure that the specialty pharmacy and associated work areas are well-maintained and tidy.
    • Develop marketing and promotional materials for patients, providers, payers, manufacturers, and other target audiences.

    II. Specialty Pharmacy Accreditation

    • Thoroughly understand all specialty accreditation standards that are applicable to the specialty pharmacy
    • Ensure the specialty pharmacy meets or exceeds accreditation standards set by all applicable accrediting bodies.
    • Coordinate all aspects of accreditation and reaccreditation, including the submission of materials for desktop review and on-site accreditation visits.
    • When areas of non-compliance are identified, formulate a timely and detailed plan on how compliance will be achieved and maintained.
    • Ensure all specialty pharmacy employees understand specialty pharmacy accreditation standards that relate to their day-to-day responsibilities
    • Maintain organized and up-to-date documentation that demonstrates compliance with specialty pharmacy accreditation standards.

    III. Manufacturer and Payer Contracting

    • Negotiate medication access for limited distribution drugs with pharmaceutical manufacturers
    • Negotiate with employers, payers, and prescription benefit managers for inclusion of the specialty pharmacy in preferred payer networks.
    • Review and analyze prescription reimbursement terms in payer contracts. Collaborate with the CEO to negotiate terms and execute contracts.
    • Hold at least quarterly check-ins with key partners to review partnership and identify opportunities for improved services.
    • Maintain relationships with drug manufacturer vendors and work to identify opportunities for improved access or acquisition costs.
    • Coordinate the development and submission of outcomes data for payers or manufacturers when contractually obligated.

    IV. Budgeting and Finance

    • Develop and maintain reports to analyze specialty pharmacy profitability.
    • Understand the specialty pharmacy pipeline and use this data to drive budgeting and purchasing decisions.
    • Coordinate the long-buy program and provide routine updates on performance to the CEO.
    • Assist the CEO with the annual budget process and monthly budget variance reports pertaining to specialty pharmacy.
    • Maintain a thorough understanding of prescription billing and reimbursement and serve as a department resource when questions or issues arise.
    • Create business plans, when necessary, to support the specialty pharmacy and improve the financial health of CRx Specialty Pharmacy.
    • Coordinate prescription re-billing services according to department policies and procedures.

    V. Human Resources

    • Supervise assigned pharmacy professional personnel in the specialty pharmacy and associated services.
    • Participate in the recruitment, interviewing and hiring of professional and technical staff, including residents.
    • Complete performance evaluations for direct reports.
    • Coordinate and lead team and staff meetings for assigned areas of responsibility.
    • Work with staff on an ongoing basis to improve performance, guiding and coaching staff in solving problems which arise in a day-to-day routine.
    • Monitor the progress of assignments and performance of daily responsibilities for all assigned personnel, coaching and disciplining staff as necessary.
    • Identify and deal with personnel issues in a proactive and timely manner, with appropriate follow-up as necessary.
    • Maintain productivity records for use in establishing staffing needs.
    • Monitor vacation, sick leave and holiday usage.
    • Measure employee satisfaction and implement improvement initiatives.
    • Develop and maintain a positive and healthy culture within all areas of oversight.
    • Provide frequent and transparent communication to employees through verbal and written communications.
    • Participate in staff meetings and provide routine communications when necessary to department employees.

    Required Skills and Competencies

    • Pharmaceutical knowledge and skills to provide care to adult and adolescent age groups in general and to a specific patient population.
    • Knowledge and skills related to computerized pharmacy systems, special prescription delivery systems, third party payor and fiscal reimbursement knowledge related to ambulatory care practices.

    Supervisory Responsibility

    This position has direct reports in leadership positions.



    Position Type and Expected Work Hours

    • Full-time/Salaried/Exempt.
    • Some flexibility in hours is allowed, but the employee must be available during the "core" work hours of 8:00AM to 5:00PM CT. We cover clients from West to East Coast, work times must be adjusted to cover meetings in all time zones. Ability to work extended hours, weekends and holidays pursuant with industry demands.

    Required Education and Experience

    • Bachelor's degree in Pharmacy or a PharmD degree
    • 3 5 years specialty pharmacy and mail order experience in a leadership role
