    Position Summary

    The Cardiology Clinic Registered Nurse will direct and deliver care to the Regional Cardiology patients. This nurse prepares patient and medical record for doctor’s visit. Applies Event Monitors, performs processes for EKG’s, and works alongside the physicians during Exercise Stress Testing procedures which is an EKD monitored exercise tolerance study which may, through EKG changes, reveal the presence of coronary artery disease. Communicates with physician and team members about changes in patient’s clinical condition, including results of diagnostic studies and symptomatology. The Cardiology Registered Nurse is responsible for the direct and indirect total nursing care of his/her cardiopulmonary patients. Cardiology Registered Clinic Nurse is also responsible for the supervision of assigned personnel.

    1. Demonstrates ability to perform treatments and provide services to level of licensure.

    2. Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.

    3. Medical and surgical asepsis is carried out during treatments and special procedures.

    4. Consults other departments, as appropriate, to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.

    5. Meets the current documentation standards and policies.

    6. Response to the patient is appropriate in emergency or physically distressful situation.

    7. Maintains a good working relationship both within the department and with other departments.

    8. Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized, and function under stressful situations.

    9. Ability to perform EKGs according to procedure.

    10. Moves electrodes along specified area of chest to produce electrocardiogram that records electromotive variations occurring in different areas of heart muscle.

    11. Monitors EKG for abnormal patters.

    12. Inputs information into machine and marks tracing to indicate positions of chest electrodes.

    13. Maintains adequate supply of paper and ink in machine.

    14. Attaches electrodes of Event Monitor to patient to record data over extended period of time.

    15. Assists physician with stress test.

    16. Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly. Inspects cardiology equipment to ensure it is functioning correctly. Reports all malfunctions.

    17. Cleans exam rooms and equipment between patients and at the end of the day.

    18. Treats patients and families with respect and dignity.

    19. Thorough knowledge of departmental forms and log books.

    20. Attends educational in-service programs to maintain competency. Attends hospital in-service programs and training.

    21. Performs other duties as assigned.


    1. Ability to read and communicate effectively.

    2. Basic computer knowledge.

    3. Must be IV Certified and willing to perform related tasks.

    4. Ability to use appropriate discretion in handling confidential information and materials.

    Supervisory Responsibility



    Required Education and Experience

    1. Graduate of an accredited RN program required.

    2. Current RN licensure in the state of Louisiana required.

    3. Current BCLS certification required.

    4. Basic Arrhythmia interpretation required.

    Preferred Education and Experience

    1. A minimum of six months of related work experience preferred.

    2. PALS and/or NRP preferred.
