Natchitoches, LA, October 24, 2023:  The Natchitoches Area Chamber of Commerce announces a special addition to this year’s Light the Way 5k and Fun Run. This race’s annual costume contest has been renamed to “The Jolly Old Saint Jack Award” in honor of the late Jack Brittain, Jr., Natchitoches legend and long-time Chamber and Light the Way supporter.

Brittain was known by many to don a Santa Claus costume for any and every Christmas occasion. In the three-year span of the Chamber’s Light the Way 5K and Fun Run, Brittain played an integral role in the event, leading the front of the line during kickoff dressed as Santa. In more recent years, he also joyfully joined our race winners in their medal presentation photos, spreading joy among participants.

The Jolly Old Saint Jack Award has been established to recognize race participants whose costumes best embody the spirit of the holiday season, reflecting Brittain’s infectious cheer and enthusiasm.

President Laura Lyles expressed, “Jack was a friend to all who knew him, and he loved the Chamber and the work we do in our community. This year’s race just won’t be the same without him, but it is our hope that the spirit of Jolly Old Saint Jack will live in all of us, always.”

Brittain’s infectious warmth has always been a beacon of happiness during the holiday season. By dedicating this award, we aim to keep his spirit alive and create new memories filled with laughter and merriment. We extend our deepest gratitude to the Brittain family for working with us to dedicate the costume contest to his honor.

The 2023 Light the Way 5k and Fun Run will take place on Sunday, November 19 from 5:00-7:00 pm. The Chamber invites all who loved Jack to walk or run this one for him. Proceeds benefit the Natchitoches Area Chamber Foundation and the NSU Track & Field Team.
